An message was received (comment below) claiming that this is a somewhat exaggerated account (commenter was emailed but no reply received), Global Voices account (translation on Shanghaiist) that some people (possibly, this is the Internet) from the school claim the teacher's classes were cancelled). Further Shanghaiist have received word from the individual involved, read here, asking to calm the coverage down.
That a crowd would turn on someone, French, American or anyone, seems quite shocking, almost as shocking as turning on Carrefour while still driving a Peugeot, wearing Lacoste, eating good cheese, drinking Wahaha water, connecting to the Internet on an Alcatel modem, or using L'Oriel cosmetics, or boycotting Airbus despite them being the only aircraft manufacturer to invest in a production plant in China (Tianjin).
If you do see an angry mob, avoid them, be you Western, Chinese, anyone.

Many western people here in Dalian were not even aware of the protest that went down on Sunday.
Until all this nationalism dies down, it's likely best to be cautious about all this mess.

carrefour protest
hello, i am the volunteer teacher involved in the supposed event. unfortunately my friend wrote that from another city before having seen me or known what actually happened. at the time he says it occured i was teaching young children far from Carrefour with no idea that the protest was even happening. Not only was i not hurt on some purported glass that left me 'cut up,' i wasn't hurt at all. And i didn't start teaching on Tuesday, i started teaching on Wednesday. One police drove the cab away, not more, which would have looked funny. And he did not get me another cab anywhere, i got myself a cab given that i HAD NOT BEEN HURT. i stayed about an hour away and did not return to teach the next morning. i am now teaching happily but repetition of this laughable sensationalist version of my story threatens to make my job here impossible. I mentor over a thousand children in this community and they will all have my mentorship ripped from them overnight if the department of education here sees how many people have posted this false account that they personally know is sensationalist and laudable.
media of all forms are taking advantage of my misfortune to turn it into big reading and gain audience and be part of the international swell of violence and anger. PLEASE DONT DO THIS. I'M FINE. NOT HURT. NO CUTS AT ALL. NOT EVEN A SCRATCH. NO VIOLENCE. JUST SAW SOME ANGRY PROTESTERS. i might lose my whole reality here and my students might lose many of their's hero because of stories like this. i know you had no idea but please, revert and remove the false story. its harmful personally, locally, and internationally.

A GEART SHOCK FOR SUCH VIOLENCE
I was shocked after reading this news. I have no idea how to express my feeling at this time.
As a Chinese youngster, I feel it necessary to show our anger towards what happened in Paris during the torch relay. But I still believe that the majority of Westeners are friendly with Chinese, no matter French or American. So I just want to say that I feel so sorry for the violence towards this volunteer teacher. It is totally insane. And I hope that it won't give a message towards the Westeners that all the Chinese people are against them. No, it is not like that.
I don't know whether there is any similar cases in Dalian, but just in case, I hope you would stay away from the problem source as far as possible. Don't give those who intend to provoke the conflict between Chinese and foreigners any chance to hurt you. We want to to be safe and live a happy life in Dalian. And I also hope all the mess will end in a short time so that the peaceful life will be restored, for you and for us also.
