News: Google Reject China, People's Daily, Official Mouthpiece, Say They're Acting Like Spoiled Child

The day after Baidu was hacked, bigger news.  It looks like either there's going to be an exit of Google from China because they think government policy has made their operation untennable, or they're bluffing.  My take as a business owner in China: in the first case that's a really bad sign for any business, especially ones seeking a domestic market - how can a business grow if it is Read more »

Varyag, Dalian's Aircraft Carrier

ChinaSMACK just did a story on a concrete building built to look like an aircraft carrier. Needless to say, a concrete aircraft carrier in Wuhan, in landlockedHubei province, isn't likely to be going anywhere soon, but the story did mention the building was designed to look like the Varyag, an ex Soviet aircraft carrier that's been moored in Dalian since 2002, yet which many locals are unaware of.

That noise you can hear

Is the Annual Air Raid Siren commemomerating Japan's invasion.

Nice how China lives in the future and doesn't dwell on the past.

A 'Davos in Dalian' Weather Forecast

A brief weather summary for the coming delegates.  The least I could do for their causing the demolition of the many historic Japanese buildings and the environmentally unfriendly dredging and land reclamation in the Ganwang Square area on a speculative exhibition center based near the port, perhaps, in 2011.  If it wasn't Davos it'd be someone else is a consoler.Monday 22° C | 14° C Partly CloudyTuesday 22° C | 15° C Scattered CloudsWednesday 24° C | 14° C ClearThursday 24° C | 19° C Scattered CloudsFriday 24° C | 14° C Clear

Dalian PX Chemical Plant

Remember the uproar over the Xiamen PX chemical plant in 2007, the one that was opposed in a poll by 55,376 votes out of 58,454, and where, according to China Daily Zhao Yufen, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has proposed the plant be relocated to avoid the possible threat of pollution in the future. Led by Zhao, who is also a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body, 105 political advisors submitted a suggestion during the annual session of the CPPCC in March asking for the plant to be relocated.

Plans are afoot for a new tower to grace the coastline of the Chinese city of Dalian famed for its unusually high natural wind speeds.

Named the Grand Hyatt after the luxury hotel chain that will be occupying the anchor tenancy of the tower, it will stand at a height of 190 metres and is the work of Chicago based architects Goettsch Partners.

Located adjacent to Xinghai Square, a large public park, the tower which is triangular in shape stands on a four storey, glazed podium base and rises to a flat featureless peak.

Dalian Docks Update

http://www.vinamaso.net/news-events/shipbuilding-repair/kawasaki-delays-...A balanced article from the Vietnam Maritime Social Network (of all places):Some interesting points about the Cosco/Kawasaki dock project: By the end of May a dock being able to build two 300,000 DWT simultaneously will be completed.  This will be China's largest capacity dock, "Mr Taniguchi said that Kawasaki Heavy had not received orders for newbuildings for more than six months," Because of this, a second dock with 1mn DWT capacity is being postponed.

For reference, a ship with a DWT of 300,000 would be classified as a very large ship, or a very large crude carrier, see picture for an example.
