I've been hearing a lot of talk from friends about the police doing random passport check in Dalian. One of my friends reported having police knock on his door, check his passport, and then head off on their way.
Another friend reports seeing police check foreigners passports at a local MacDonalds. Cops were accompanied by translators, and had a car on hand should you need transportation home in the event that it wasn't on your person.
Has anyone else been subject to such checks?

I have not experienced it directly myself, but speaking with a manager of an English school I understand he has had a few teachers checked both at apartments and via random street inspection.
An aspect of this is registering your apartment with the local PSB. I have had Chinese friends who rent have their apartments subject to random check on who seems to be living there simply because the apartment is rented.
I should post on this - signs in the lifts of more central apartment blocks are going up (in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean) reminding of the necessity for anyone not from Dalian (as I understand, including Chinese from other cities or at least from rural areas) to register with the police on arrival. Not a new law, but just like visas, now being enforced more strictly.
