100 things I've learned about Dalian
The Dalian Forum is a way of organising all the posts across the site into sections to make what you're finding faster. There are no 'forum posts' per-se, rather all posts, from wikis to questions to blogs to events to listings, are brought together here, and split by topic and location. We hope this is a useful way to find the Dalian information you're looking for quickly. If you want to make a post you can as a question, add an event, make a blog post, or add lots more types of things here. Return to the main forum page here.
I'll start.
(add as many or as few as you want)
100. Always ask for "the book" when shopping at electronic city (it's a staff price list).
99. Never trust the green man when crossing the road. Keep your eyes peeled always, because traffic signals are merely suggestions.
98. Korean and Japanese restaurants and imported goods can be just as comforting as Western food.
97. Metro is a great place to shop, but you'll always spend about 3 times more than you planned.
96. I55 Coffee and Riviera Restaurant are both very overpriced.

Re: 100 things I've learned about Dalian
95. Farmers, migrant workers, general outsiders and the guys selling 'jianbingguozi' are far more likely to give you a light than a local 'business' man in a suit.
94. Japanese buffet sushi/sake is fantastic value for money.
93. Jianbingguozi (煎餅果子)are even better for money (2 yuan).
92. Conversations with taxi drivers are useful for learning about local issues and local concerns that newspapers do not report.
91. A proxy is essential for normal usage of the Internet.
90. Influencial friends are really really important for 'getting stuff done'.
89. For home comforts, especially TV shows where the networks fail (refuse) to stream to China, BitTorrent is essential (would be happy to pay, but no retail outlets).
Re: 100 things I've learned about Dalian
here's my two cents:
88. When going to the Development Zone on the light rail, you're most likely to find a seat if in the last two cars.
87. Dalian is not a Northern Pearl, nor does it resemble Hong Kong in any way.
86. Chinese friends come and go in a flash. Deep friendships are hard to come by here.
85. DalianDalian.com is way better than Dalianxpat.com. There are less losers on here (so far).
84. JDs Bar is the dodgiest bar ever. Avoid it like the plague.
83. Victory Square underground shopping mall cannot be navigated. Don't even try to learn your way around.

Re: 100 things I've learned about Dalian
Ah, nothing like a good list.
82. Wind is not your friend. When buying a jacket, how well it keeps out that Siberian gust is the key metric.
81. Cold beer is a thing to be treasured. If you find the rare chuan'r stand with a cooler under the table, you have struck gold.
80. One such rare chuan'r stand is across from Heping Guangchang, off in an alley, right around where Gao'erji Lu splits off from Zhongshan Lu.
79. Grungier restaurants with cheaper (often better) food can do wonders for your Chinese.
78. That said, WalMart is a luxury, and any hesitation I have about shopping there in the US stays in the US.
Re: 100 things I've learned about Dalian
77. Young people in Dalian people are generally outgoing, intelligent, open, entrepreneurial, and humorous.
76. Tina Coffee is for cake on a date, Echo Book Bar is for chillin' with the gang, and Lohas is for getting your art on.
75. The "famous" 大盘鸡 Xinjiang chicken joint at the East Gate of DongCai is completely overrated, and the people keeping it busy are HeiShiJiao locals that wouldn't know real Xinjiang food if they tripped over it. The 西北马记 down the street from the Manhattan Towers is a much better choice.
74. The Children's Park south of SanBa is a great place for romantic night-walks.
73. Bus #23 is amazing. Straight up runs the gamut.
72. Killing time kicking a jianzi in ZhongShan Circle is a cool way to hang out, exercise, and meet Chinese people.
71. There's a dope shower/sauna/massage joint near TianJin Street where you can get full-service shower/scrub and foot massage for an inexplicable 29 kuai. They will try to push prostitutes on you, however, for disturbingly low prices.
70. I-55... what a scam.
69. I know it's hard to get around Victory Plaza, but just read the little colored markers on the floor: blue is for north (train station), red is for south (NewMart).
68. Aside from the great seafood, Dalian ain't the tip-top of culinary delights , but 焖子 MenZi has to be one of the most simple and delicious street foods around... garlicy and filling and cheap.
Re: 100 things I've learned about Dalian
67. It's worth making the trip over to Kai Fa Qu (Dalian Development Area) to climb Black Mountain (not too taxing and with a great view at the top) and then have a bath, sauna, and massage in the wonderful Kai lun hotsprings "resort". You can even stay the night there sleeping on a massage chair and get free breakfast in the morning :)
66. Xinghai square is always windy! It is also "the biggest square in Asia" even though Tiananmen square is "the biggest square in the world."
65. The new food court on the 5th floor of NewMart is well worth checking out.
64. Dalian Dry Beer.
63. Dalian is a pleasant but not particularly exciting place to live. Watching the city developing year by year is interesting, but the cultural scene here is nascent/negligible. I guess that's why so many of the comments here are about food.
62 Learn a bit of the Dalian/Dongbei dialect to make the locals laugh.
