Winter Is Here. 100 Things to do.

Now winter is here, let's make a list about things to do and prepare for in Dalian's bitter winters. Here's a start:

  • Buy thermals. They're available at most supermarkets in a variety of thicknesses: really thick (grandparent/army style), thick (but can fit under loose fitting trousers, wool), medium (decent cotton), thin (low quality/weak bind).
  • Make soups: Boil vegetables. Leave them to cool. Mix them in a food processor. Heat. Nice belly warmer.
  • Buy an oven (200-300 kuai) and start roasting things.
  • Don't fall over on the ice. Seriously, not only why does the Dalian government not de-ice the streets, but why do they actually allow polished/gloss tiles in streets and entrances of shopping centers/apartment blocks. Easy to clean but a deadly health hazard.
  • Enjoy the heating. I hear it comes on around the 15th of November. If you rent or are provided dormitories it's law to provide residents with a 24 hour minimum temperature of 16 degrees, 18 degrees if they're a foreigner (bizarre special case).

I was photographing something else when he walked across and turned around. This shot was far more interesting. Cropped in GIMP.

My first attempt at medium format photography comes in the form of an old Soviet made Kiev-60 camera. It seems there is a little fault with the winding mechanism, and so the first roll of twelve features overlapping shots. Even though in this case I think it might even add to the appeal somewhat, I'll still try to find the source of the problem before I have a go with film number two.

If the towering moments clad in green cloth, flashing with energy through the night, are the star attractions in China's modernisation drive, then taking place two hours before sunrise in the gutters that flank these construction sites is one of the more interesting sideshows. As groundwater from the recent heavy rain is pumped out of the new foundations that are being dug ten metres away, to flow away down into the drains of the symbolically named Changjiang Road, taxi drivers from all across Dalian line up with their buckets and mops to bathe in this bonanza of clean water, or near enough, that would otherwise be going to waste. At a time when the North of China struggles to combat serious water shortages in the face of continued economic growth, let it be noted that while the means by which they make their living may be the cause of environmental problems of a different nature, these drivers were at least doing their bit to conserve water.

...but only because the sun is shining this week.

As the World Economic Forum drew nearer, conventional advertising was puled down from billboards across the city, to be replaced with large posters publicising Davos, billing the various entrepreneurs and business leaders who will be attending the "Summer Davos" conference as the world's "New Champions".

Not all billboards were withdrawn though. Those featuring visions of President Hu's "Harmonious Society" remained very much in place. Just how much longer can the Chinese government keep a straight face while it carries out it's logical juggling act ?
